FMD control: Vaccination or slaughter?
The latest case of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the UK has re-opened the debate as to whether vaccination is a better method of controlling the spread of the virus than compulsory slaughter. The latter policy led to the culling of some 7 million animals in the six months it took to bring the previous 2001 UK epidemic under control. During that outbreak the Government rejected the use of vaccination since it could not persuade farmers that it would both halt the spread of the disease epidemic and be cost effective for the national livestock industry. However, legislative change in the wake of the 2001 crisis means that the vaccination option must now be given more weight when formulating a control policy....

The initial findings of the investigation into the UK's foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak conclude that the Pirbright laboratories are the most likely source of the virus, with deliberate or accidental release through human movement the probable cause. However, it has not indicated which facility is the more likely origin of the infection....

Anger grows over "own goal" UK FMD infection
With the national control measures appearing to have successfully contained the UK's foot and mouth disease incident over the weekend and a research centre under investigation as the most likely source of the virus, livestock farmers are questioning how the infection could have come from an institution actually dedicated to maintaining animal health.

Merial issued a statement on Monday, August 6th, from its headquarters in Duluth, Georgia claiming that an initial investigation of its foot and mouth disease (FMD) research center at Pirbright, UK, found "no breach" in its operating procedures, and that it welcomes the arrival of an independent investigation team....

UK foot and mouth disease outbreak link to Merial research lab
The UK Government has confirmed that the outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) on a beef unit in the county of Surrey, to the south of London, was caused by a virus identical to that used at a nearby research institute. Results of preliminary investigations into the outbreak are expected by Tuesday....
