Foot and mouth disease (FMD) has reappeared in the UK, after it was first diagnosed in August, and days after the government had declared the country free of the disease.

The Department of Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) confirmed an outbreak of FMD on a farm in Egham, Surrey, on the western outskirts of London, yesterday. 

The latest case is some 20km north of the two cases discovered in the Pirbright area in early August, which were subsequently linked to a faulty drain serving a treatment plant between laboratories belonging to the Institute for Animal Health and Merial Animal Health (Click here to view UK FMD outbreak blamed on leaking drains news story).

A 10km control zone was in force around the infected premises, Milton Park Farm, and cattle on the unit, reported to number up to 300 head, are being slaughtered as a control measure. DEFRA says that cattle and pigs on a neighboring farm are also to be culled as possible contacts....
