Right on track: RFID will improve traceability and monitoring in the food supply chain

The global market for RFID (radio-frequency identification) monitoring systems in animals, food and farming is expected to grow to $6.5bn in 10 years time.

This is the conclusion of a report "RFID for Animals, Food and Farming 2007-2017" by consulting firm IDTechEx. It predicts that the value of the market will increase 12-fold between 2007 and 2017.

In livestock and pets, RFID technology is being used to improve responses to disease outbreaks, determine proof of vaccination and registration. IDTechEx points out that the use of RFID technology in livestock is well advanced in Australia and Canada, and cattle RFID tagging will be mandatory in the EU in 2010....
