Salmonella is present in nearly a third of EU turkey flocks reared for human consumption

Salmonella
is present in nearly a third of EU turkey flocks reared for human consumption, and in around 14% of breeder flocks, reports the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The survey of Salmonella levels on commercial turkey farms in the EU and Norway between 2006 and 2007 will help the European Commission to set targets for the reduction of S enteritidis and S typhimurium in European turkey flocks. These serovars are the most common cause of disease in humans.

The EFSA also recommends that EU member states take action to reduce other types of Salmonella.
