Pfizer buys animal genetics companies

The agreement between Pfizer, Catapult Genetics and Bovigen is expected to be complete by the end of the month
Pfizer Animal Health is to acquire two livestock genomics companies. The agreement is expected to complete by the end of the month. No financial details have been disclosed.

Pfizer will buy New Zealand's Catapult Genetics, which develops and commercializes livestock DNA tests and gene markers for the food industry, and Bovigen, a genetic technology company based in Harahan, Louisiana.

Juan Ramon Alaix, president of Pfizer Animal Health, says that the move will expand the company's livestock gene marker R&D program and the services it offers in this field. He adds that current genetic tests are focused on productivity and carcass quality, but in the future the technology could help predict disease in animals and target medicines to those livestock in most need of treatment.

Catapult and Bovigen will continue to market products and services to their own customers as well as Pfizer's. Bovigen markets Catapult's products throughout the Americas.
