Intervet has granted its Dieter Luetticken Award to Professor George Gettinby of the University of Strathclyde, UK. The Euro 20,000 ($31,000) award is given to encourage the reduction, refinement or replacement of animal tests in the development of veterinary medicines.
Intervet's Dieter Luetticken Award goes to Professor George Gettinby
Dr Gettinby was chosen for his statistical and epidemiological research methods for sea lice treatments used in salmon farming. His work has provided guidance on how many fish should be sampled to provide reliable estimates of infection rates. It has also resulted in mathematical models that can simulate the effect of treatments on lice populations. These methods, which have been adopted by various companies, make it possible to reduce the number of fish used in tests and to minimize the use of veterinary medicines in the environment.
