Mr Simmons will take over from Patrick James, who has held the post since 2001. He is to become a special advisor on agriculture corporate development to the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. Mr James began his career with parent company Lilly in 1978 as a sales representative.
Mr Simmons joined Lilly in 1989 as an animal health sales representative for Elanco and worked his way up to executive director of its US operations in 2003.
"Jeff's broad experiences in the animal health business, his track record of delivering outstanding results, and his strong leadership qualities make him an excellent choice to lead our Elanco business," said Lilly president and chief operating officer Dr John C Lechleiter.
