| European researchers to develop bluetongue surveillance protocols |

| Bluetongue mainly affects sheep but has also been seen in cattle since last summer |
European researchers are developing bluetongue surveillance protocols as they fear that the disease, which is now prevalent in Europe, may recur this spring.
The surveillance protocols are part of Medreonet, an EU-funded project initiated last year to improve the surveillance of three animal diseases
transmitted by small biting midges, Culicoides: bluetongue, African horse sickness and epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD)....

| AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) names Dr Ron DeHaven executive vice-president |

| Dr Ron DeHaven |
Dr Ron DeHaven is to become executive vice-president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). He has been with the Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service arm of the US Department of Agriculture since 1979 and for the past three years has served as administrator. He will succeed Dr Bruce
Little, who has been the AVMA executive vice-president since 1996 and will be retiring later this year.
AVMA president Dr Roger Mahr said: "I have a great
deal of respect and admiration for Dr DeHaven's global perspective on the continuing convergence of animal health, human health and ecosystem health. This
global perspective makes him uniquely qualified to serve as executive vice-president." Dr DeHaven was awarded the Secretary's Honor Award in 2003 and 2004
for his handling of chronic wasting disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy in the country, and also received the AVMA's Meritorious Service Award for
his contributions to the veterinary profession. |
