US researchers find that soil enhances prion infectivity
US researchers have discovered that the "rogue" proteins responsible for causing transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), or prion diseases, in animals are significantly more infectious when they are bound to common soil particles.

| The breed may be predisposed to the infection |
Bernese dogs prone to Borrelia burgdorferi
Bernese Mountain dogs are particularly prone to infection with the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, but not to acquiring glomerulonephritis, a type of kidney damage caused by the infection, say Swiss researchers. The infection is transmitted by ticks.
